きのこ帝国 (Kinoko Teikoku) - WHIRLPOOL
Went to the Next Music From Tokyo vol. 5 concert on Saturday. The tour has never disappointed me, and this one was no exception. I just wish I could’ve stayed for the whole thing. I missed seeing this band, though the lead singer did a special set at the beginning with an acoustic guitar which sent chills up my spine. ‘Magnetic’ is a word that comes to mind. Like someone behind me was saying, it was as if Feist had met Radiohead, and in Japanese. I also agree with my friend guibass in that she is one of the best vocalists I’ve seen so far from NMFT. (And to think I was sitting next to her on Thursday. Not that it could’ve amounted to much conversation-wise.)
‘KT’, as I shall call them for short, is a shoe gaze band — a term I hadn’t heard of until now, and makes me really wish I had been able to stay for their set. From what I’ve heard of them so far, they’ve coupled a post-rock sound with some ethereal vocals to create some musical witchcraft which I for one want more of.
This volume also brought back chiina, filled with their usual vibrant cheer, as well as some new faces like harafromhell and Mouse on the Keys. Though I had to leave half way through, I’ve heard since from a very reliable source that the whole night overall was as memorable as the first half.

It’s definitely worth checking out, if only to get a taste of what’s going on in the world of rock music outside the Western bubble.
